Skuodas
The Capital of stones.
Skuodas country – one of the smallest among the administrational units of the Lithuanian Respublic – is located in the North western part of Lithuania. Its territory covers 911 square meters. Research in Skuodas region shows that people have resided in these parts since old times. Almost in every village archaeologists find traces: stone tools and iron. Numerous burial mounds witness that the inhabitants of these territories had to defend their tribes and possessuons from the enemies with primitive weapons and fortifications.
The sacrificial shrines and stones witness the times of pagan religion. In the protected Mosėdis pagan shrine the holy fire kept and protected until the XV – XVIII centuries, or, as some claim, even until the 19th century.
Historical sources mention the name of skuodas for the first time in 1253 as a part of Kuršas territory. In 1572 Skuodas was granted the rights of Magdeburg
Skuodas is the administrational centre of the region and has a population of (about) 25500 today. The Museum, Culture Centre, Library, gymnasium of Pr. Žadeikis, Bartuva secondary School, M. Valančius primary school, Skuodas agricultural, business, trade and servise school, art school, kindergarten, nursing house for old people, post – office, hospital, forts – aid office, sevelar banks and several shoping centres operate in Skuodas. As in every city here, there are many tipes of entertainment, concerts and various traditional events.
