Šiauliai
The fourth most important academic city of the country.
To the economic and cultural centre of Northern Lithuania. To the fourth most important academic city of the country. To the Sun City. The name of Šiauliai derives from the Battle of Saulė (Battle of the Sun), and this northern city of the country therefore has such a warm name. The city, heavily destroyed by wars in the last century, has risen back to life like a phoenix from the ashes. Perhaps we cannot invite you for a stroll through an extant old town, but we can offer the feel of its rhythm in modern, shifting spaces: in one of the first pedestrian boulevards in Europe, in Prisikėlimo Square (Resurrection Square), in Saulės Laikrodžio Square (Sundial Square).
Šiauliai has already celebrated its 775th birthday. The city is a whole century older than the capital Vilnius, a year older than Berlin, and barely a year younger than Teheran… Thus, once again we greet you on your arrival in Šiauliai, a city of long history, beautiful traditions, and great future prospects. We hope that you will have an interesting and pleasant time here and that you will wish to return after your departure.
