Raseiniai

Raseiniai

A modern Middle Eastern and European pilgrimage centre.

"Raseiniai region is a modern Middle Eastern and European pilgrimage center, convenient and safe to live, attractive to visit and invest'- it is said in Raseiniai district municipality development vision. A lot of region people and organizations work trendy so that the vision would become a reality.

Raseiniai region is located on the westen part of Lithuania, in a picturesque area, which landscape is formed by the river Dubysa, forests and mounds.

Raseiniai was mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1253. It was recorded by Mindaugas, the King of Lithuania, when he gave some lands, including half of Raseiniai’ land, to Livonian Order. However, historians consider that the beginnings of the city Raseiniai appeared in the X century, at the time when the clusters of dwellers (in the XIII century they were called the castles districts) had been forming in the Lowlands.

From the end of XIV till the beginning of XV century Raseiniai was one of the most important Lowland centers. By the will of Henry III (Henry of Valois), the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Raseiniai became the political capital of Samogotia (or Lower Lithuania) in 1574 and preserved this title virtually until the end of XVIII century.

Currently Raseiniai region area is 1573 square kilometers, a population is 40,656 (year 2010), 99% of the population are Lithuanians in origin.

We are rich in our history, cultural heritage, proud of the industrious people who showed their courage and endurance in the battles for freedom and have supported the spirit of the region so far.

Rural tourism has been developed successfully in the area. Now there are 10 functioning rural tourism farmsteads. Most of the farmsteads are located in the Dubysa Regional Park, the surrounding amazing nature creates a special atmosphere for recreation.

Raseiniai and other region small towns (Nemakščiai, Lyduvėnai, Šiluva, Betygala, Ariogala and others) are interesting and attractive in their own way, but it is impossible to assess without staying there. So we invite you to visit and learn about Raseiniai region!
