Pakruojis

Pakruojis

The land of windmills.

Pakruojis district is located in the north-eastern part of Šiauliai County, near the Latvian border. Pakruojis district is best known for its windmills. Currently there are 17 extant windmills.

The first reference of Pakruojis was mentioned in written sources in 1531. Pakruojis town derived its name from the river Kruooja, which flows through the town.

In the all Pakruojis area you can see a few mounds, a narrow railway exhibition, Pakruojis museum “Žiemgala“ in Žeimelis, several churches, the Monastery of Karmelitai and the oldest wooden synagogue of the Jews in Lithuania.

Pakruojis is most attractive for tourists and guests of the area, because of the largest real estate in Lithuania – Pakruojis manor house, which remained 34 buildings. This ensemble, which is like a museum under the open sky, is mostly valued for its architectural and stylistic integrity. The real estate of Pakruojis is included in the Lithuanian Book of Records (2005).
