National Symbols
Expressions of State Sovereignty
State symbols – the coat of arms, the flag and the anthem - are an expression of state sovereignty. They are used as the official symbols of the State both internally in the State, and in international relations.
Lithuanian State symbols are of centuries-old traditions. They originate as the official symbols of the first Lithuanian monarchs and reflect the changeable history of Lithuanian statehood.
The Coat Of Arms of Lithuania
The Coat Of Arms of Lithuania- an armour-clad knight on horseback holding a sword and shield, known as Vytis ("the Chaser") is one of the oldest national coats of arms in Europe. Its allegory was taken over not from dynastic coats of arms, as in many European countries, but descended from the portrait stamps of dukes.
The Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas approved the official coat of arms and symbol, Vytis, by passing the Law on the National Coat of Arms on 11 March 1990.

The Lithuanian national (state) flag
The State flag of the Republic of Lithuania is the national flag, made up of a cloth comprised of three equal horizontal bands: yellow on top, green in the middle, red on the bottom. Its width to length ratio is 1 to 2.
Until the beginning of twentieth century Lithuania did not have a national flag. After long disputes, on 19 April 1918 the Commission decided that the Lithuanian national flag shall be three horizontal bands of equal width: yellow-green-red. Yellow means the sun, light and well-being green - natural beauty, freedom and hope, and red - the earth, courage, sacrifice shed blood. The national flag Lithuanian project has been approved by the Council of Lithuania.
On 7 October 1988 at10 o’clock a tricolour flag was officially flagged at Gediminas Castle Tower in Vilnius.

Lithuanian anthem
Nowadays modern states have not only visual - coats of arms, flags, but also sound symbols of the State. These are called anthems. The idea of Lithuanian national anthem as well as the idea of the national flag arose abroad. Vincas Kudirka (1858-1899) has written words and music for the Lithuanian anthem, which is often referred to as the National Song. On 18 November 1988 Supreme Council adopted a law which declared the Kudirka National Song as the anthem of Lithuania.
Lithuanian historical symbols
Two historical symbols – the Pillars of Gediminas and Jogailaičiai double Cross shall be also considered as the symbols of the State. These are one of the basic historical symbols of the Lithuanian State, which are widely used these days in a public life.
