Biržai
The capital of karst sinkholes.
The history of Biržai, one of the oldest Lithuanian towns, lasts already for five centuries. It is the regional centre in the northern part of Lithuania, having a glorious history, beautiful nature and deep ancient beer brewing traditions, as well as sincere and hospitable people. Today Biržai are famous not only for its past. Unique natural values in Biržai area provoke the curiosity of travellers, and attract numerous visitors who later may share their adventures with others. Here you will see Širvėna lake, the oldest artificial lake in Lithuania, the biggest sinkhole named “Karvės Ola”, numerous small sinkhole lakes in Kirkilai, a natural monument – Smardonė spring, dolomite exposures at the banks of the Nemunėlis, and other traces of natural phenomena.
The ornament of Biržai town, and the reflection of the past is the inheritance of the dukes Radvilos from the 16th – 17th centuries – the Biržai fortress palace protected by thick walls, water pits, preserved defence dikes, and Širvėna Lake, the oldest artificial lake in Lithuania. On the other side of Širvėna Lake you will find the inheritance of counts Tiškevičiai from the 19th century – the Astravas manor - ensemble of expressive architectural forms, having the exceptional landscape value, and being one of the most beautiful buildings of the romanticism period.
Biržai invites you!
